Azrael
Azrael is the mischievous, sharp-eared feline companion of the evil wizard Gargamel. Always on the hunt for Smurfs (or at least pretending to be), Azrael brings a mix of cunning, chaos, and unexpected comedy to every Smurf adventure. With his orange fur, expressive eyes, and dramatic reactions, he has become one of the most iconic animals in the Smurf universe.
Facts about Azrael
🐱 He is Gargamel’s loyal—but often smarter—sidekick. Azrael helps Gargamel track down Smurfs, but he’s not afraid to roll his eyes when his master’s plans go wrong. In many stories, Azrael seems to understand the situation better than Gargamel himself!
🤣 He provides lots of physical comedy. Azrael is known for hilarious reactions: flattening against trees, flying through the air, falling into mud, or diving after Smurfs and missing by an inch. His expressive face makes him one of the funniest characters in the series.
🎬 He appears in the live-action Smurfs movies. In the 2011 and 2013 films, Azrael follows Gargamel into the human world. His chase scenes, frustrated meowing, and interactions with real-world animals make him a standout character. He even becomes surprisingly brave—especially when protecting Gargamel.
📺 He plays a major role in the 2021 CGI series. The newer show highlights Azrael’s personality more than ever. He growls, hisses, plots, and sometimes even outwits Gargamel. In several episodes, Azrael nearly catches Smurfs on his own, proving he's more capable than he looks.
🐾 His relationship with Gargamel is both loyal and comical. Azrael follows his master everywhere, even when Gargamel’s schemes are ridiculous. He often gets dragged into plans he never asked for—but he keeps going, showing a strange but strong bond between the two.
😼 He has a mischievous streak. Azrael enjoys chasing Smurfs, pouncing from bushes, or sneaking behind trees. But he also loves napping, grooming, and avoiding Gargamel’s anger when a plan fails.
🧙 He has been part of the Smurfs since the early Peyo comics. Azrael appears in many original stories, usually accompanying Gargamel into the forest. His design has changed slightly across adaptations, but his attitude remains the same: sly, loyal, and always ready to pounce.
🏃 He often causes trouble for the Smurfs. Azrael can track scents, spot footprints, or notice Smurfs hiding in the grass. Even though he rarely succeeds, he pushes the Smurfs into many exciting escapes and memorable chase scenes.
🌟 He’s one of the most recognizable animal characters in cartoon history. With his sharp meow, distinctive orange coat, and dramatic temperament, Azrael has become a classic villain’s sidekick beloved by fans of all ages.
Discover why Azrael remains a central figure in Smurf stories—combining humor, danger, and unforgettable personality in every chase through the forest.
